A Day In The Sun ~ Acceptance & Inclusiveness Will End Gun Violence

Wouldn’t it be the best time ever if we felt it was our moment in the sun? To feel warm and welcome and accepted just as we are (no matter our size, or skin tone, age, talents or personality quirks)? You know ~ just the pure happiness of being who we are!

In the age of school shooting massacres, it seems imperative that we find a way to promote this feeling of inclusiveness. Those who feel ostracized from a young age are taking their rage to ever-explosive levels. The adult killing sprees also reveal individuals who have histories of being marginalized in their youth.

Yes, we need new common sense gun laws. We also need to understand the pressure our children are feeling to fit-in to a peer system that can, at times, be heart-breakingly cruel. So many kids today compromise their own behavior because they live in fear of being left out.

When I was a child we had fire drills at school. Today, it is lock-down drills. Kids learn to take shelter under their desks as teachers lock doors to try and protect them from being killed. Police and security guards can only do so much.

There is hope. I believe it comes from identifying and understanding the underlying distress that causes someone in pain to take such brutal actions against their classmates. Bullying must be stopped.

At my granddaughter’s school, the forth and fifth grade has formed a Kindness Club. Promoting awareness and compassion for others is the essential ingredient. They are creating bookmarks right now that carry a positive message. The goal is that, when someone reads a library book and stumbles upon the bookmark, it will brighten their day. A small endeavor, maybe, but the intention is priceless.

Oh how I wish every child from every walk of life knew how very loved they are. My hope is that they feel the light beam within them that is eternal. Let’s promote a world where children can enjoy their studies and extra-curricular activities without the need to please a social pecking order. May every child feel accepted and included, and be in their natural state of joy!
